Acne

Acne is a common skin condition caused by blocked hair follicles, leading to pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, oily skin, and sometimes scarring. It is often triggered by hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, and can be influenced by genetics. Treatments vary from over-the-counter products and lifestyle changes to prescription medications, depending on the severity of the acne
Pharmunity - Modern pharmacy care, delivered to you.
Causes

  • Blocked follicles: Acne starts when dead skin cells and oil (sebum) clog hair follicles.
  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or due to birth control can increase oil production.
  • Bacteria: A type of skin bacterium called P. acnes can become more aggressive in the oily, clogged follicle, leading to inflammation and pus.
  • Genetics: A family history of acne increases your likelihood of developing it.
  • Other factors: Certain medications, cosmetics, and high humidity or oily environments can also contribute.
Symptoms

  • Blackheads and whiteheads: These are non-inflammatory clogged pores.
  • Pimples: Inflammatory bumps that can be red and pus-filled.
  • Nodules and cysts: More severe, painful, solid lumps that form deeper under the skin.
  • Oily skin: The condition can make the skin look and feel oily.
  • Scarring: More severe acne can leave permanent scars or changes in skin colour.
